i took this picture on the way to work. the sun was coming up and catching on the dew. it was a beautiful but cold morning. i am sorry that work was too busy to permit a walk at lunch time. i had a lunch time meeting at the space needle, though, so there were views of downtown and the water. the elevator operator said sometimes people ask if bainbridge island, in the distance, is japan. (no.)

I haven't been very productive with crafting lately. I really need to get into gear soon because the holidays are coming up, and it'd be nice if I could make gifts (something I always say I'm going to do, but never really get around to actually doing). I kind'a got back into it last night, though. I crocheted miniature cupcakes for some of my coworkers whose birthdays are this month.
I'm still working on a scarf I'm knitting for Operation Gratitude, a program in which pochacco906, smiledoggie and I are participating. It's taking me a long time because I'm using small needles and a worsted-weight yarn. I should've done a scarf with giant needles and chunky yarn so I could finish faster! Oh well, I'll be happy when it's finally done and shipped off to the troops overseas. :) Cross-posted here at weloveamigurumi.

| hedgehog and hibernation |
[03 Nov 2009|09:38am] |
it is autumn, and it's really a mixed blessing. i LOVE the colors and the crisp air, and indian summer (which the Northwest has had about 3 days of, mixed in with rain.) But the shorter days do make me blue. It's really too bad because autumn colors are my favorites, and i love apples and pumpkin pie! this little fellow is someone i drew this weekend. he seems autumny to me as well. he, and some of his buddies, are on etsy. mostly i just like to draw and draw and draw. and i would not mind sleeping some too, and knitting, and having snacks. and then sleeping some more. but i do work 40 hours a week and that sort of puts a crimp in my natural inclinations. i have a notion there should be such a thing as a hibernation grant, that one could apply for, it would pay your bills while you slept through winter.

For my third post on the Hello Kitty Three Apples exhibition, I'd like to show you photos I took of the Hello Kitty–themed apartment that was on display. The mini apartment was protected by glass, but thanks to the optical zoom on my camera, I was able to get sort'a close to the cuteness. If you haven't read my previous posts on the exhibition, check out the product retrospective & displays and the art show.
Don't forget to stop by this free exhibition if you're going to be in the L.A. area in the next two weeks. It's so worth the trip! The Three Apples exhibition is running now until November 15 at the Royal/T Café in Culver City. Royal/T Café & Art Space 8910 Washington Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232 (310) 559-6300 www.royal-t.org

[01 Nov 2009|10:33am] |
halloween was fun, but i am glad it is over and am glad to be into november, a month that i prefer to october, on the whole. yesterday was gorgeous, warm enough to go out with a warm sweater and no coat, and the colors are beautiful, all gold and orange with a few bits of red. i hope today will be nice enough for a walk!
here i am in my belly dancer's outfit, i have zills, the little cymbals, but i was not holding them in this picture. jesse was a jesse'o'lantern.

Today is Hello Kitty's birthday. I hope I look that cute when I'm 35. =P Hello Kitty's had a lot of different looks over the years, but my favorite is the classic Kitty: blue coveralls, yellow shirt and a red bow over her left ear. These are a few of my classic Hello Kitty trinkets.
Hello Kitty's motto is "You can never have too many friends." I'm thankful for the friends I've made during the years I've been here on LJ. I hope you all celebrate Hello Kitty's birthday in your own special way — by making a new friend or simply sharing a smile with someone. :)

jesse and i just went out to breakfast, mmm, gluten free pancakes! and then we went to the library, i had some books waiting, and starbucks. i also went to la tienda, a cool boutique in ballard and got my sister's birthday presents! :) and managed not to buy anything for myself but i can't promise i won't go back! they have gorgeous scarves and jewelry and clothing and ceramics and .. i could go on. they also are known for their celebration of the day of the dead, so the place was very festive and one of the clerks was wearing traditional mexican folk dress.
this is a picture jesse took of my new sweater i knit, modified from knitty.com's sonnet, and a hat i crocheted.

Here's my second post on the Hello Kitty Three Apples exhibition. While my previous post showed you some of the product retrospectives and Hello Kitty displays, this one focuses on the art. JapanLA curated an art show that showcases various artist renditions of Hello Kitty. Click the LJ cut to see photos I took of some of the pieces.
It's kind'a neat to see how different people interpret Hello Kitty, isn't it? My next post will be all about the Hello Kitty–themed apartment! The Three Apples exhibition is currently running at the Royal/T Café until November 15. Royal/T Café & Art Space 8910 Washington Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232 (310) 559-6300 www.royal-t.org

I took a long lunch break yesterday to see the Hello Kitty Three Apples exhibition at Royal/T Café in Culver City, as it's only five miles from my office. The café is inspired by the maid cafés in Tokyo's Akihabara district, and it's also a cool art space. Which makes it perfect for Sanrio's first-ever Hello Kitty–exclusive exhibition, all in honor of the feline's 35th anniversary.
It consists of Hello Kitty memorabilia throughout the years, a Hello Kitty–themed apartment, and various artist renditions of the lovable cat. As I was putting together this post, I realized I had way too many photos for one entry. So I'm splitting them up in several posts. This first post includes photos from various displays throughout the art space, including product retrospectives. Right-click and view alternate text for captions.
I feel so lucky that such a collection is located this close to me. I thought I'd have to go to Japan or San Francisco to see all that Hello Kitty in one place. I was seriously on cloud nine here. I'm going to try to go back before the exhibition closes. If you're in the L.A. area from now until November 15, and you love Hello Kitty, definitely check this out. It's so much fun...and it's free!

If you haven't been to Yogurtland lately, I suggest you go and get yourself a collectible Tokidoki spoon. The partnership between the Italian designer and the self-serve yogurt joint debuted last week. I went to one location inside a mall, and they only had the paper Tokidoki cups with the usual pink and green Yogurtland spoons. So I went to another location, and they had the cups and spoons! (You can see the cup in this photo of Joe Jonas eating at Yogurtland earlier today.)
This month they released the Mozzarella and Latte collectible spoons. On November 23 they'll be releasing two more spoons: Captain Coco and Donutella. I'm definitely going to be getting my froyo on more regularly so I can collect multiple spoons. They're biodegradable and so durable that they can be reused. Plus they're cute! What more could you ask for in a yogurt spoon?

| angel ornaments and literature |
[28 Oct 2009|09:05pm] |
this is a peek of what i have been working on this week.. i listed these on etsy. now i wish i had more time for beading and that my right shoulder was a little more cooperative. i think i need to take a beading break now and go read!
i have been reading the Homer Kelly mysteries by Jane Langton, which I like because they include a lot of history of the area where she lives - Concord -- home of the Alcotts, Walden Pond, Thoreau, Emerson, etc. Also it was a pivotal point in the American revolution and the civil war - so just brimming with history. However I am waiting for the library to bring me another one in that series so i will have to find something else to read. Last night I read in one sitting Ebb Tide by James P. Blaylock, wonderfully eerie and whimsical steampunk fiction with a dash of Robert Louis Stevenson thrown in. I'll find something to start on tonight .

| holiday ornaments |
[28 Oct 2009|10:19am] |
i am working on some angel ornamnents for my etsy shop for the holidays. this is one i made last year. the current batch will each be quite different. the faces will all be different as well. the face shown here is by RAMA, but that company no longer exists, and i will probably save my small hoard of rama faces for gifts. the angel i made last night had a sliver face.
i am also working on some small pen and ink drawings for the shop, which will come matted in a simple black or white matte. good gifts! i will try to have everything pretty reasonably priced.

in england hedgehogs are sometimes called tiggys, hence beatrix potter's heroine mrs. tiggy-winkle. they are also called urchins. this is just a little note from me that i listed 3 little works of art on etsy, this being one, and also a little mouse and some autumn leaves.
